Firefly Burns Bright at Brunch!
As if we hadn't had enough of hotel brunches...we went to another one on July 15! This time, it was at the trendy Kimpton hotel, Hotel Madeira. Question: why are there so many Kimpton Hotels in D.C.?? Can someone answer this for me? Don't get me wrong, so far, I love their restaurants - Poste, Firefly, Urbana, ummm....ok, well those are the only Kimpton restaurants I have been to in D.C., but I have heard positive things about the others. I just find it odd there are so many. Last count was 7 in D.C. and one in both Alexandria and Arlington! That is the same number as their home city of San Fran! Crazy! Ok...not that anyone else wonders about the Kimptons...you probably are more concerned with things like 2008 Elections, Middle East, Harry Potter...just thought I would throw this onto the slab.
Back to Firefly which I love, love, loved. I can't wait to go again for happy hour because the drinks are awesome (except for their Irish Coffee - she forgot the baileys, oops.) It will also be a great winter venue because of their cozy decor...I like their decor better than Poste's, but Poste has the kickass courtyard and cuban mojito guy - it's a toss up. Guess we need to do an official Poste brunch, not to be confused with the "Poste-Brunch."
Here is Ann's official review of Firefly:
***7/15 Brunch at Firefly – Readout***
Located in the Hotel Madeira on New Hampshire, Firefly is a little off the beaten path, but that just adds to the cozy atmosphere. We fell in love with the décor as soon as we walked in. It is pretty small, but not crowded or too loud. They could use more servers as we almost passed out from dehydration after walking there in the disgusting DC humidity, but we may have just been getting overly excited about the delicious drink menu they placed in front of us!!
Vanessa the excellent bartender there creates new drinks every month, such as the Ruby Sparkler and the Cherry Blossom Mojito. I had a combination of iced tea, lemonade and grapefruit infused vodka, called the 19th Hole and it was yummy!! Dana had the Ruby Sparkler which was a mix of sparkling white whine, pomegranate syrup and pomegranate liquor. Erica had an irish coffee that I think was just ok (served in a mason jar glass and no whipped cream...). They use locally produced products and everything is a la carte. It is a little on the pricey side, but you are paying for quality and it IS a hotel restaurant... Jeri will be pleased to know that there was not even a blink when Erica requested an egg white omelet! I also had the omelet (with yolks) and it was with swiss cheese, wild mushrooms (and they did appear to be wild as opposed to fresh from Safeway) and came with the BEST homefries we have had to date. They were very simple with skin on, but amazing!!! Dana ordered the “green eggs and ham” which is actually a quiche/pie type item that is all whipped and pureed layers of green, no chunks of vegetables, but surprisingly tasty. Dana was able to sub out the side salad for a fruit salad that she reported was all fresh and delicious. We also ordered a side of truffle oil fries for the table and I may have eaten them all myself – yum. Poste has a similar side and I am not sure which I like better (note: must try fries at Poste, for research purposes...!)
We had an overzealous busboy who kept grabbing anything off the table that was not actually in our hands and I almost had to kill him when he tried to take away the remaining truffle fries, but overall it was a great experience and I would definitely go back for brunch. As we were so impressed with bartender Vanessa we also want to try a Happy Hour there!
