There is no Axis of evil here!
On Sunday, May 8th, the DCBC hit up Axis, a new restaurant on U street. Not only did we have good brunch, it was the start to a great Sunday and a new DCBC trend: Sunday = the new Friday. (The only suck part about this equation is Monday does not = the new Saturday) After Axis, Kevin (soon to be the wingdude on www.mywingdude.com - an awesome new blog) and I decided that we were going to make our sunday as the higher power intended - a day to lounge about the city of DC and drink copious amounts of alcohol. That higher power is so wise! From Axis, we moved on to Poste (see review) and then to Toledo Lounge...we didn't call it a night until 11:30PM!! 12 hours of lounging/drinking/chatting - IMPRESSIVE! So, we decided Sunday's were the best days, that is until we hit Monday, and I had a nasty hangover. However, that didn't stop me from making the next Sunday a partying marathon (see Oyamel review).
A few additions to Ann's review - I spilled my bloody mary after about 2 minutes of having it, not because I was drunk, but because I am ridiculously graceful and elegant in my gestures and it just hopped out in front of my hands. Our server was very helpful and gave me a new bloody mary, which made me happy. (Note: I again spilled my drink at Toledo Lounge later the same day - that was not due to grace, I was drunk.) Our server and bartender also spent some time trying to think of who the music was by and when the bartender figured it out, he wrote down the artist's name on a napkin for me. I lost it and don't remember who it is, but I liked the gesture. It doesn't take much to please me, especially when I have a good bloody mary in hand!

Axis Brunch 5/8
Last week we went to Axis ( http://www.axisbarandgrill.com/) on U Street. I think it opened earlier this year and it is better known for its beer selection, a lot of unique beers on tap (and Miller Light or something light that for those who can’t cope with the microbrews...). When I arrived at 11:20 or so the door was locked and I panicked that I had lured you there with the promise of brunch and now we would be stranded with no place to go but the dreaded Crème a few doors down! But, the friendly bartender (whose name I forget, Erica may remember) came and let me in and set me up at a table for 6. He and the single waiter (single as in only, I am not sure of his relationship status) were super nice, but pretty overwhelmed as they were the only servers because the 3rd called in sick. The bloody marys were delicious (I would say second only to those at the Willard) but the mimosas were just so-so and the coffee was not good at all. Kevin had the steak and eggs, and I think Liz had eggs benedict or something other than omelet...however, the rest of us had omelets and were generally pleased. I was happy because the omelet was not too cooked and not at all runny, but fluffy with the cheese evenly dispersed. It is really annoying when all the ingredients in an omelet are all bunched at one portion.... There is a choice of side: fries, hash browns or fruit/salad. I heartily recommend the fries (I have also had these at the bar in the evening more than once and can report that they are consistently crispy and delicious!!) and the salad are good, but the hash brown looked suspiciously similar the McDonalds hash brown.
Axis has more of a bar than restaurant feel to me, but I like the open atmosphere, the kindness and attitude of the servers and the food and bloody marys!! More importantly they provided a glass of club soda at no cost – since it is WATER. Unlike Crème, approximately 2 doors down that charged me $4 for the same drink because, my server reported, “...that is the price in this neighborhood...” Really?
Even though they were definitely busy and as a result, there were a few delays or forgotten requests, they made it a great atmosphere and we had a good time! I would definitely go back.
