Vegetate Surrounded by Vegan Rumors
Wow....it's hard to get back into the swing of blogging! I went on a bit of a blog binge and then nothing for a few weeks - somewhat similar to what happened with DCBC during the time I am still blogging about (March 15-April 22). Yep, there was a massive gap in brunches as Ann had to travel off to China for work (likely excuse) and it couldn't be placed between two more different bruncheries - the Willard and Vegetate, the not-so Vegan brunch spot in the somewhat dicey 9th and O neighborhood.
The reason I call it the not-so Vegan restaurant is before we went people kept calling it a Vegan joint, so as I invited friends and mentioned it was Vegan, most of them bailed. (Can't say I blame them, I am not Vegan and it's not really in right now - it was so highschool, but I don't mind tofu, so I was down.) As you will see from Ann's review, there were eggs - yep, real eggs, and milk products. So, if you were avoiding it because it was Vegan, don't worry, you can get overpriced eggs and milk along with your tofu! Ok, ok, some people liked it. I will have to go with Ann's final sentiment, wouldn't mind trying it for drinks (provided we take a cab), because I do remember some people getting the Bloody Mary's and saying they weren't bad. I don't remember what bevo I had...too many weeks and drinks ago to remember.
ANN'S REVIEW: "Vegetate Brunch (last Sunday)
We went to Vegetate last Sunday, despite the fact that our groups’ main vegetarian, Anne, did not join us...! The location is a little off the beaten path for most folks but the owners are local and I like the design. The service was annoyingly slow and the waitress was not exactly charming or helpful regarding special requests ... or butter. I think we all liked our food, but it is a little more expensive than I expected (plain egg omelet is $8 and each add is .75!) The eggs were delicious and they had a selection of fresh squeezed juices and an yummy limeade!! Erica had the miniveggie burger that were very spicy. Kevin had the mushroom gnocchi and reported that it was a little “pasty.” If you go for brunch, stick with the “breakfast” foods...
As the owner is a DJ, the music was great! I think it would be fun to go there for drinks and hang out in the evening."
